Your next concert night could be in the comfort of your living room. Con: It’ll be way less cool. Pro: The drinks are a lot cheaper.
What happened: Netflix is reportedly in talks with Spotify to launch more music-centred content, including a live concert series, celebrity interviews, and potentially a music awards show, according to the Wall Street Journal.
- The streamer is already rebooting Star Search, an old-school talent show that gave way to the likes of American Idol and The Voice. It’s also launching a new series, Building the Band, which basically sounds like Love Is Blind with instruments.
Why it matters: Netflix’s ambitions go well beyond traditional TV and movies. By adding everything from live music to video games to sporting events, the streamer is vying to be the closest thing to an all-in-one entertainment hub we’ve seen in the internet age — a streaming super app, if you will.
- The streamer is already piloting a TikTok-like feed on its mobile platform, adding more gaming, and may end up with the rights to air Formula One in the U.S.
Bottom line: In a crowded entertainment market, Netflix is trying to capture as much of its users' attention and time as possible, and is venturing into the wheelhouses of TikTok and Twitch to make it happen.—LA
