Singapore auctions off ill-gotten handbags

Singapore auctions off ill-gotten handbags

Singapore is auctioning off a cache of luxury items it seized as part of a massive 2023 anti-money laundering raid, with proceeds going straight to the government’s coffers.

What happened: Deloitte is administering the auction, which includes more than 460 luxury items. Buyers will raise their paddles to bid on Hermès bags, Patek Philippe wristwatches, and a limited-edition Louis Vuitton pumpkin bag that previously went for US$151,200.

  • Other assets seized as part of the raid in the process of being liquidated include 152 properties, many of which are in Singapore’s most desirable areas, and 62 vehicles.

Big picture: The auction isn’t just glitz and glamour. The raid in which the items were seized continues to reverberate across Singapore as the city-state tries to manage its status as an international wealth hub while also avoiding becoming a money laundering hot spot.

  • The scandal involved 10 Chinese nationals who used Singaporean banks to launder the proceeds of overseas organized crime ventures, like scams and online gambling.

  • The incident has since led to measures to tighten reporting, expand inter-agency sharing, and make it easier to prosecute such crimes — plus steep fines for banks.

Why it matters: As much as US$2 trillion generated from illicit activities is laundered each year. Singapore is setting an example by cracking down on the issue after a massive lapse. It’s something that other countries, like Canada, could potentially learn a lesson from.—QH
