Write for The Peak

We’re looking for smart, talented writers to contribute to The Peak. If you’re interested in pitching us, please read our guidelines below.

How do I pitch?

You can email [email protected]. Please send a quick description of your idea rather than a completed piece.

What type of stories are you looking for?

800-to-1,200-word stories of original business reporting with a strong Canadian angle. We are interested in stories that take on exciting and unique subject matter, or are able to make traditionally stuffy material fresh and interesting. Some examples: a deep dive on a mysterious industry, a profile on an interesting business, or revelations about a corporate trend. Recent articles we’ve published include an analysis of what’s ailing Canada’s cycling industry and a report on the print media resurgence.

800-to-1,200-word explainer-style pieces about ongoing international events/issues. Stories that offer clear and precise analysis of hot-button issues or under-reported world events you think are worthy of attention. This could include updates on long-running conflicts, breakdowns of foreign election results, or answering high-level economic questions. Recent articles we’ve published include an analysis of French municipal elections and answering the question “could Canada join the EU?”

Of course, scoops are always welcome, as well.

What type of stories are you not looking for?

We don’t publish opinion, or pieces that could be described as op-eds. We are less interested in pieces that contain no new information (like analysis that just synthesizes already-reported information). We also don’t generally cover national politics, except insofar as it is a story that is directly relevant to business and the economy.

What is the process like?

We will try to respond to all pitches. If accepted, we will agree on a word count, deadline, and rate. One of our editors will work with you on the draft in Google Docs. Once it’s in good shape, we’ll queue it for publication and let you know when it runs.

Once you have written for us, you’ll be invited to join our writer portal where we regularly publish requests for pitches on various topics that you can accept if you like.

Our kill fee is 25% of the agreed-upon fee for the piece.

How much do you pay?

It varies by piece depending on scope and complexity, but the floor is $0.50 per word. We pay all invoices within 10 business days via e-transfer or credit card.
