Ever scroll through Instagram and see your friends flying first class, wondering how the heck they pay for it? Well, sometimes they don’t. Here are a few free ways you can upgrade to flyin' first class, à la Fergie ft. Ludacris (or Jack Harlow, for our Gen Zers). First, if your flight gets cancelled, ask about rebooking in first class. Airlines have to accommodate you on the next available flight (with some caveats). If no economy seats are open, you might just snag that upgrade for free. Similarly, if you find yourself on an overbooked flight and can be flexible, consider volunteering to take a later flight — but only if it’s first class. Third, frequent flyers tend to have better chances for upgrades, so loyalty to an airline pays off. Lastly, and the biggest hack of all: be nice to the airport staff. It might sound simple — and you should do it regardless — but this writer’s mom was patient with staff while other passengers weren’t, and they were the ones with the power that got her flight from Bali to Toronto upgraded to first class… with a shower and free caviar.
