If you’re hanging onto your student discount well after you’ve graduated, companies might start calling your bluff. Students can snag sweet discounts on everything from Amazon Prime subscriptions to music streaming and mobile plans. But now, more companies are leaning into status-verification technology to catch people who don’t fit the student profile — even if they still feel 18 years old. For example, Amazon automatically yanks its 50% Prime discount once a user turns 25 unless they’re still actively enrolled in school and can offer up proof. Losing those discounts can hit you pretty hard, especially when you don’t see the price increases coming. Take Spotify’s student plan: it’s $5.99 a month, but the regular price is $10.99, which means you’re looking at an extra $60 a year. But if you’re feeling lucky (and youthful), you can still try your luck at using in-person student discounts if your ID doesn’t have an expiration date.
