Electronic price tags may soon be coming to a store near you. If your screen time wasn’t already high enough, Walmart has rolled out electronic shelf labels in over 340 locations in Canada alone, with a goal to expand to 2,300 stores by 2026. The labels show prices and product info on digital screens instead of the usual paper tags. This means prices can change really quickly — sometimes in just 10 seconds. While this tech can help grocery stores save on labour costs, it also raises some eyebrows about dynamic pricing. This is when prices change based on demand, like if it’s a hot day and popsicle prices go up, or if something is close to expiring and gets a discount. Walmart insists it won’t use dynamic pricing with these new labels, but a successful project could tempt other stores to jump on board the electronic wagon.
