In the future, you might be able to check your bags without constantly worrying they’ll disappear forever.
What happened: Apple is rolling out a new feature with its next iPhone software update that will let users securely share the location of their AirTags via a link. And Air Canada, along with 17 other major global airlines, plans to integrate the new tool into its systems.
- Users will be able to send these links directly to airline staff starting at select airports, per iPhone in Canada, with a widespread rollout slated for some time next year.
Catch-up: Previously, Air Canada was unable to accommodate consumer tracking tech, leading to embarrassing viral incidents — like last year, when the airline said luggage was lost and ended up donating it, despite its owners knowing where it was thanks to AirTags.
Why it matters: While this development only affects Apple users who fly Air Canada (sorry all you Android-wielding WestJetters), it marks a broader shift in the aviation industry, with airlines adopting new tech to try and reduce lost luggage. And, miraculously, it’s working.
Big picture: Thanks to better tech, global baggage mishandling rates dropped by 9% annually in 2023 despite higher passenger numbers, per SITA Baggage IT Insights 2024.—QH
