Working a side gig can be worth it if you are able to balance your day job. A new survey from Express Employment Professionals found that 29% of Canadians who are working and job hunting are actually doing side gigs while on the clock. But, it turns out that those employees who get caught by their companies don’t get in that much trouble. In fact, 32% of employers just ask employees to do their side work after hours, and only 11% actually end up firing them. While that might make it feel like not a big risk, there is still a real chance you could lose your job, and your employer could even file a civil lawsuit against you for time theft. So, if you want to do a side gig while you have a day job, the best approach is making sure it doesn’t jeopardize your main gig. That means setting boundaries, like drawing a clear line between when your day job ends and your side hustle begins, and meeting the demands of their day job first. To keep track of your work, use a time management app (like Trello or Evernote) to schedule your day, including breaks.
