If you want to be able to afford a more expensive home, it may be time to give up your car. On average, owning a car costs around $1,400 a month, factoring in payments, insurance, fuel, and maintenance. A recent Zoocasa report shows how cutting car expenses could free up a lot of money for housing, especially if you go from two cars to one, or even ditch your car entirely. In places like Thunder Bay, Ontario, the savings from cutting car costs could actually cover more than 100% of your mortgage. In fact, 42% of the Canadian cities studied found that switching from two cars to one could save over 70% of a family’s monthly mortgage. Although the savings cover a lower share of housing costs in more expensive cities like Vancouver or Toronto, the public transportation systems may offer an easier transition. And giving up a car isn’t as tough as it sounds. In an Uber study, 170 people gave up their cars for a month, and 20% said they’d consider going car-free for good.
