How to score free stuff while on vacation

If you’ve ever taken a trip, you know the dilemma—do you bring stuff from home and pay for a checked bag, or pack the bare minimum and then buy what you need when you arrive. But did you know there’s a third option? And it doesn’t cost a thing.

You can take advantage of the “ecosystem of free stuff” on vacation. The Wall Street Journal describes it as a pay-it-forward system, where people on vacation leave behind extras like water, snacks and sunscreen they don’t want to haul home for the next group of holidaymakers.

  • On Facebook, you can find groups called “pass it on, baby” for specific vacation spots like Disney resorts, Las Vegas and South Beach.

  • Social media has made the process much easier, with those at the end of their stay simply posting a pic of everything they’ve left behind and where you can find it in the hotel or resort.

Taking leftovers is an excellent way to cut down the cost of your holiday, but if you don’t act fast, chances are some other frugal fiend will scoop it up before you. But there are some less competitive ways to score freebies on holiday:

  • Check out your hotel’s happy hour. Many hotels host a happy hour for guests where they provide a complimentary beverage or snack.

  • Help yourself to hotel toiletries. Forgot your toothbrush? Call down to the front desk and request one. While you’re at it, ask about any other personal hygiene products they provide (bonus points if it’s a high-end hotel with brand name products like Aveda or Keihl’s.)

  • See the city for free. Whenever I land in a new town, the first thing I do is book a free walking tour—not only is it inexpensive, the guides can give you tips on places to eat, what attractions are overrated and locals-only info. Just make sure you tip them.
